UNSW Rural Clinical School collaborates with Monebo Technologies Inc for rural heart rhythm screening with a focus on atrial fibrillation

UNSW’s Rural Clinical School (RCS) is excited to launch a research collaboration with Monebo Technologies, Inc. (Texas, USA). The collaboration allows use of Monebo’s leading industry cardiac arrhythmia detection software to screen for atrial fibrillation using our school’s small ECG devices.

The Monebo software will be used to support e-health research in the rural Victoria town of Ararat. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm that is responsible for stroke and progressive heart disease and can often lead to people feeling light headed and generally reporting a lower quality of life.

As the population ages there is an increase in the community burden of atrial fibrillation.

The UNSW Rural Clinical School atrial fibrillation screening project is part of the Big Ararat Health Study which is a research collaborative between the UNSW RCS and the East Grampians Health Service, and is overseen by RCS Research Director Associate Professor Craig McLachlan. PhD student Dr Alex Gavino -- under supervisor A/Professor McLachlan -- has relocated to Ararat to undertake this research as part of his PhD program.

”Monebo has been very generous in supporting our school’s research needs,” says A/Professor McLachlan. “Indeed we all recognize the need for rural atrial fibrillation screening in regional and remote Australia.”

A/Professor McLachlan says collaboration with industry supports the emerging agenda to foster innovation with industry through smart university collaborations.

“RCS has access to unique populations to validate commercial technologies and to engage in collaborations,” A/Professor McLachlan adds.

“Monebo brings to the table their proprietary digital signal processing algorithms that are being utilized by medical device innovation companies, such as C.R. Bard,” says Dr Gavino.

Monebo Technologies, Inc. is a Texas based technology company that offers products and services related to cardiovascular health. They are focused on providing solutions that allow healthcare providers and patients to manage and reduce complications associated with heart disease. With this vision, they have developed technologies for cardiac monitoring, home care, and pharmaceutical cardiac safety trials.

UNSW’s RCS brings world-class medical education to the rural Australia, training the next generation of rural and Indigenous doctors, and leads the way in rural healthcare and medical research.
