Selection Process for Entry in 2013
Selection of Applicants for RSES Interview
Students will be selected for interview using a combination of the following criteria:
- The rural rating of the family home and school (from age five)
- ATAR or ATAR and university marks
- Performance in UMAT
Students will be selected for interview on the basis of all three of the criteria listed above, that is; academic merit, results in UMAT and rural rating of the home and school address.
UMAT - Update April 2012
From 2012 UMAT scores can be used for admission to any of the UMAT Consortium universities ONLY in the year following the test. For example, results from UMAT 2012 can be used for undergraduate medicine or health science courses beginning in 2013 but NOT 2014. Do not register for UMAT 2012 unless you are planning to apply for a course commencing in 2013.
Please note that the change will not affect candidates who sat UMAT 2011 under the previous policy. UMAT 2011 scores will still be accepted for courses commencing in 2013.
Note
Achieving the minimum criteria for interview does not guarantee selection for interview. The mark to gain an interview will vary from year to year according to the standard of the applications. The minimum score for UMAT to be considered for interview is 135 (when you combine the 3 raw scores not percentile). Applicants whose combined score is less than 135 will not be considered for interview. Applicants whose ATAR and/or University marks are lower than 91.00 will not be considered for interview.
Selection for Interview
Interviews will be held in Sydney in November. The forty-five minute, semi-structured interview gauges the suitability of applicants for a career in medicine. The interview panel will consist of:
- A doctor who has worked or works in a rural community
- A representative from a rural community
Applicants who have been selected for interview will be contacted by email.
Please ensure that your email address will be current in 2013 if using a school email address. Applicants who are using a hotmail email address, please note that hotmail may send UNSW email addresses to the junk or trash folder.
Applicants whose actual ATAR is higher than estimated and meet the requirements of selection for interview may be offered a second round interview in early January. Late round applicants who meet the requirements for selection for interview will also be interviewed on these dates. Applicants who are offered an interview will be contacted by email in late December 2012.
Selection into Medicine
Applicants will be selected on the basis of four criteria; namely performance at interview, results of UMAT, academic merit and rural rating. These four criteria have equal weighting.
Successful applicants will be notified of their offer of a place in UNSW Medicine through UAC. UNSW does not contact unsuccessful applicants.
