Retired consultant ophthalmic surgeon. Practised in UK, Northern Nigeria, Cyprus, Jerusalem, Bahrein, Canada, Northern Territory, Australia. After retirement from clinical practice in 1999 became involved in the activities of the Rural Clinical School in Coffs Harbour. Presently co-ordinates the Year Five and Year Six programmes. Also provides some undergraduate instruction in ophthalmology.

Research interest: the economic contribution made to undergraduate medical education by the wider medical community. The soi-disant science surrounding certain so-called complementary therapies, especially homeopathy, acupuncture and intercessory prayer is another concern.

Interests outside medicine include medicine blogging, Apple computers, bridge, current affairs and all things French.

Married to Pat, a retired physiotherapist.

Main areas of practice include colonic and rectal cancer, manometery and Bio-feed-back programmes for faecal incontinence and obstructed defecation, colonic and oesophageal stenting and laparoscopic surgery. Main areas of research include Evidence Based Surgery and meta-analysis of non-randomised comparative studies of surgical procedures.

Dr Chia is a consultant rehabilitation physician. She trained at Sydney University, and then undertook her specialist training in Melbourne at the Alfred, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Epworth Hospital and Monash Medical Centre before moving to Coffs Harbour for a sea change.

Dr Gould’s background is in General Practice in the UK, New Zealand and Australia over a span of 25 years. She has had experience in practising both orthodox medicine and complementary therapies such as acupuncture. She is involved in projects with the Mid North Coast Division of General Practice in tobacco cessation, youth health and GP Wellbeing. She helped found the Refugee Clinic in Coffs Harbour Health Campus: this clinic provides an interesting opportunity for exotic clinical experiences for students. Her research interest is in smoking cessation in Indigenous communities.

Dr Jelliffe studied medicine at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London, graduating with MBBS, Honours in Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He then spent time as the Neurosurgical house-surgeon at Middlesex Hospital and house-physician at St. Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth. During 45 years in Coffs Harbour, Dr Jelliffe has supervised many students various medical schools He also took part in the FMP training scheme. Dr Jelliffe retired from practice in April 2004, but continues to assist the general surgeons at the local private hospital and conducts medical examinations for the Department of Immigration.

Dr John Kramer has been a GP in Woolgoolga since 1981. He has been involved with the RCS in Coffs Harbour since its inception in 2002. He graduated from UNSW in 1978. His clinical interests are Developmental Paediatrics, Indigenous Health, Refugee Health, Mental Health, Aged Care and Medical Education. He is married with four adult children. Away from Medicine and Family he enjoys his garden, railways, travel, sport, photography, reading and collecting.

Dr Kramer is the coordinator of the Health Maintenance component of the fourth year course. She practices in the emergency department of the Base Hospital and in the Women’s Health Centre. She also works as a medical editor. Her current interests are patient safety and breast disease.
